When You Have to Leave Your Pet Home

As pet owners, we all understand that it is not always possible to bring one’s pets with us when we go out of town on vacation. So, when this happens — when we are unable to travel with our dog or cat — we must turn to plan B. When you have to leave your pet at home, what solution do you come up with? What is your routine? At Pets Head to Tail, we would be pleased to offer you some (what we think are) brilliant ideas:

  1. Have a trusted friend or family member stay with your pet. In order to keep up your pet’s care and exercise routine, the best possible outcome is to have a “dog-sitter” or “house-sitter” come to stay with your animals. Though the benefits certainly outweigh the negatives, having someone stay in your home must involve a high level of trust in an already-strong relationship. However, the house-sitter may continue walking, feeding, and caring for your pets in the same way that you already do. Typically, dog-sitters or house-sitters come with a daily rate, and although family members or friends may refuse to take compensation, daily rates usually fall somewhere in the $20-$35 range, depending on the area and work load.
  2. Board your dog in a certified, insured kennel, preferable a kennel run by a group of veterinarians. Another option while you are away is to bring your dog or cat to a kennel. The kennel should provide plenty of opportunities for your pet to maintain his or her typical routine. Most kennels offer outdoor playtime, along with customized feeding times.
  3. Have your dog or cat stay with a trusted friend or family member. Bring your dog or cat to someone’s house for the duration of your trip. This person will be able to continue your pet’s routine and care for your animal in a similar way that you do. One drawback includes some differences in environment that a transition to a new home inevitably brings.

Anytime you plan and prepare to take a trip, the unplanned rears its often ugly head. While it isn’t always possible to bring your dog or cat, there are some great solutions for your pet. When searching for one of these solutions, make sure to do your home and research all options for cost-effectiveness, safety, and cleanliness. Additionally, leave your care giver with plenty of information — all of the details — including your expectations, the needs of your pets, and important phone numbers. Have a great trip!
