Presidents and First Pets

Happy Presidents’ Day! As we celebrate the great service of our country’s leaders in leading our nation, we look to their dogs (and other rather unusual pets). As they undoubtedly carried the weight of the world on their shoulders throughout their years in leadership, our nation’s presidents most assuredly found comfort in their relationship with the First Pets.

American presidents have a long and glorious history of pet ownership. Owning a dog or a cat is about as American as baseball games in the summertime, barbeques on the 4th of July, or homemade apple pie. Not only did many of our Presidents own dogs and cats, they also owned other very unusual pets. Here are some fun facts regarding United States Presidents and their pets:

  • George Washington, our nation’s first president, owned many dogs, including several Coonhounds and Staghounds. He also owned a Lemur and a messenger pigeon named Edmond.
  • Thomas Jefferson and his family had three Briards. Additionally, he kept two grizzly bear cubs. They were a gift from the Lewis and Clark expedition.
  • John Quincy Addams kept a very unusual pet — an alligator — in the White House bath tub.
  • Martin Van Buren received two tiger cubs as a gift from the Sultan of Oman. He later gave these pets to a zoo.
  • The King of Siam gave James Buchanan elephants as a gift during his presidency. Buchanan also had a pair of Bald Eagles and a Newfoundland named Lara.
  • Abraham Lincoln, while in the White House, owned many pets, including many dogs, cats, goats, rabbits, and turkeys.
  • Rutherford B. Hayes and his family loved animals, and they owned many while he served as President. Among the Hayes family pets, there were goats, canaries, hunting dogs, shepherd dogs, a mockingbird, 4 kittens, a Mastiff, a Newfoundland, a Terrier, and a Greyhound.
  • Theodore Roosevelt was a strong conservationist and established the first National Wildlife Sanctuary. Roosevelt is also credited with preserving millions of acres of land as National Parks. His family owned many pets, including several dogs, cats, a badger, a pony, a rat, a garter snake, a Macaw, 12 horses, 5 guinea pigs, 5 bears, roosters, lizards, an owl, a raccoon, a coyote, a lion, a hyena, and a zebra.
  • William Taft owned a milk cow named Pauline whom he kept in the White House kitchen.
  • Calvin Coolidge had many pets, including lots of dogs, cats, pigmy hippos, a donkey, raccoons, a bobcat, a thrush, a mockingbird, a bear, an antelope, a wallaby, and lion cubs. Many of the pigmy hippos in zoos today are descendents of Coolidge’s hippos.
  • The Obama family chose Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog, shortly after the family moved into the White House.

So many of our Presidents adored animals. They cherished their relationships with their pets and welcomed many dogs, cats, and other pets into the White House. What a wonderful legacy and example for the the American people!

More New Breeds from Westminster

What’s your absolute favorite dog breed? Are you completely loyal to one breed in particular? Often, when we focus on our favorite breeds, we forget to research or gain the ability to recognize the relatively new breeds that exist. At the 136th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last Sunday evening, though, six new breeds were featured as entrants competing for Best in Show. Though none of the six took the coveted designation, these breeds continue to gain recognition and popularity amongst Americans and other dog lovers around the world.

On Wednesday, we featured three of these six. Today, we feature the remaining three breeds competing for the first time at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Finnish Lapphund

Though thought to have existed in Scandinavia for hundreds (possibly thousands) of years amongst native tribes, the Finnish Lapphund only this year had the privilege of competing in the Westminster show. The breed has gained popularity among Finnish families in particular. Their thick fur sets off their beautiful, expressive faces nicely. They are highly intelligent and devoted dogs who have a great capacity to serve and help others. The Finnish Lapphund is a willing trainee — eager to learn, and extremely sociable around people and other dogs.

Norwegian Lundehund

Have you ever seen a dog with six toes on each foot? The Norwegian Lundehund is especially equipped to navigate high cliffs and rocky shoreline to hunt Puffins — a type of bird that exists near the Scandinavian coastlines. For hundreds of years, this small, flexible dog has worked to retrieve Puffin birds for local farmers to make a living off of Puffin bird meat and feathers. Because of this, the Norwegian Lundehund has a double coat of reddish-brown fur with white collar, feet, and tail tip. Today, Puffins are protected and no longer hunted for meat. As such, the Norwegian Lundehund is now popular as a playful, cheerful companion that has a propensity for getting into mischief.

Xoloitzcuintli

Yes, this conglomeration of letters IS, in fact, a dog breed, and one that you have probably heard of in the past. This dog — commonly referred to as Xolo (pronounced “show-low”) is the national dog of Mexico. The Xolo was previously known as the Mexican Hairless. Xolos were revered by the Aztec Indians as protectors of the dead. Still found in the Mexican wilderness, this breed remains extremely popular because of its intelligence and natural cleanliness.

We hope you enjoyed learning about some of the newly-recognized breeds. Even though all three of the breeds we’ve featured today have been around for centuries, we are excited about their growing popularity as household (and competitive) pets worldwide.

Meet the New Breeds!

Ever wonder how the a new dog breed gets recognized and accepted? Well, when a new breed establishes popularity through a recognized club, they allow that breed to be introduced at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This year, 185 breeds competed in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This competition (held last night) included six new breeds. Even though the title Best in Show went to a dog of an older breed — Malachy the Pekingese — we are excited about the presence of these new breeds at the show.

Today, we would like to introduce three of these new breeds to our readers. Look for these lovable dogs at your neighborhood park soon!

American English Coonhound

The American English Coonhound is a member of the Hound group and has a very similar appearance to the English Foxhound (its relative). As a natural hunter, this dog requires vigorous, regular exercise in order to maintain appropriate behavior. The American English Coonhound’s sturdy, multicolored coat allows it to adapt to a wide range of environments.

These medium-sized dogs have a lot of energy, and they will go after any type of small animal. They are great with children, but as puppies, they can be very curious and at times, destructive. The American English Coonhound is very positive, energetic, sociable, and makes for a great family pet.

Cesky Terrier

This short, stout, muscular dog is a member of the Terrier group. Its long, soft coat requires regular grooming. The Cesky Terrier (pronounced CHESS-kee) originated in Czechoslovakia and the dogs typically have predominantly grey fur. Cesky Terriers are among the most rare breeds in the world.

Their temperaments call for strong human leadership, as they can tend to be somewhat aggressive without proper training. However, with training, the Cesky Terrier is a quiet and calm dog that does not require vigorous exercise.

Entlebucher Mountain Dog

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a smaller replica of the Swiss Mountain Dog. This medium sized dog shares many characteristics with other dogs bred for the mountains. As a member of the Herding Group, the Entlebucher is bred for hard work and loyal companionship.

Regarding its temperament, the Entlebucher requires a health mix of exercise and social activity, because of its breeding and characteristics. The breed has a wonderful personality, but tends to be suspicious of strangers.

Stay tuned for more new dog breeds! We hope you enjoyed watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last night.

Whether you’re hanging out with friends or going out on a date, here are a few pet-friendly activities:

  • Take a walk. Go on a fun group outing tonight with your dogs. Bundle up, and go on a walk through the park with your dogs. Instead of taking a horse-drawn carriage ride and placing stress on an already over-worked horse, get some exercise and have fun outside!
  • Cook at home. Make a great meal at home! Your pets will be excited to have you home, and you won’t have to bear with all of the crowds out on Valentine’s Day.
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter. If you’re looking for a great way to serve your community, spend some time helping out at a local animal shelter with your date. You’ll get to know each other on a different level, and you’ll get to serve animals in need!

We hope you have a great day honoring the people and animals in your life with whom you share close relationships! Pouring out love to others is what today is all about. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Your Pet

Looking for some fun and easy ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your dog or cat? Tomorrow — Tuesday, February 14th — is the national day of love! Here are just a few ideas of ways to celebrate with your pet from Pets Head to Tail.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Pet

  • In honor of Valentine’s Day, Pets Head to Tail is giving 1/2 off on shipping charges for any $25 (or more) order with the code BEMINE! Order something fun and special for your pet.
  • Throw around some of your dog’s favorite chew toys — or better yet, make a few “new” ones out of some of your old socks. Simply knot up a medium-sized sock for your dog — you could even “dye” a white sock pink by putting it in the washing machine with red sock.
  • Hide a few cat treats around your house for your cat to hunt during the day tomorrow. When you get home from work, have one waiting for her in one of your pockets.
  • Create a Valentine’s Day group of boxes for your cat. Decorate them with red and pink markers in honor of Valentine’s Day.
  • Write a letter expressing thanks to your dog or cat for what they mean to you. Even though your dog or cat may not fully comprehend all of the things you express, you can place the letter next to a favorite picture of your pet in a larger frame. What a great way to remember and celebrate the love you have for your pet!

How Your Pet Celebrates Valentine’s Day with You

No, your pet probably doesn’t understand how nice it would be to send you flowers or buy you chocolates. But, your pet does celebrate Valentine’s Day with you — every day of the year! Each one of us has special relationships with our pets. They continue to pour out love to us on good and bad days. They pursue us — greet us when we get home, show us love, pursue us — even we are seemingly unlovable. Valentine’s Day celebrates the love that exists here on this earth, and the love that we share with our pets deserves attention and celebration. How will you honor your dog or cat tomorrow and express thanks for a wonderful Valentine’s Day?

Countdown to a Pet-Friendly Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day 2012 is just 3 days away (Tuesday, February 14)! In honor of the annual celebration of love, we would like to offer up a few tips for making this year fantastic. Love exists in endless forms, and we see many types of love each and every day. The love between a human and an animal involves so much emotion, sacrifice, and many mutual benefits. What are some ways to enjoy the holiday and keep your pet happy, healthy, safe?

Valentine’s Day Dangers

When you think about Valentine’s Day, what are some of the traditional gifts that come to mind? Chocolate (yum!) and flowers — of course! But these types of festivities can cause hazardous situations for dogs and cats when left around the house. Here are some things to watch out for this year when giving gifts to your loved ones:

  • Discarded Wrapping Paper. After you exchange gifts this Valentine’s Day, make sure to throw away the wrapping paper, cellophane wrap, and tissue paper immediately. Many dogs and cats are attracted to these discarded items, and will ingest them, if left to their own accord. Paper and cellophane wrap is not good for an animal’s digestive system.
  • Spilled or Leftover Cocktails. Leftover liquor can harm your cat or dog, particularly because it takes much left of the substance to impact their bodies. Make sure to put wine, beer, and alcoholic drinks away and clean up any spills right away.
  • Open Boxes of Chocolates. It’s no secret that chocolate contains a chemical that’s potentially fatal to dogs. Wrap up any chocolate and place it out of the way. The fridge is typically the safest place.
  • Lilies. ALL varieties of lilies can be fatal to cats. Interestingly enough, most cat owners are not aware of this reality. If you give or receive flowers for Valentine’s Day and own a cat, make sure that communicate this fact clearly to all parties involved.
  • Candles and Fireplaces. Keep your pets safe by putting out any fires or candles safely.

Have a safe and wonderful Valentine’s Day! Enjoy celebrating all of the love that you experience each and every day!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month!

Does your pet’s nasty breath get you down? Take hope and comfort in the promise of National Pet Dental Health Month! With a plethora of resources, information and discounts being given out this month, your pet can get consistently fresh breath — and healthy teeth and gums as well! As humans, we are profoundly aware of the importance of caring for our own teeth and gums. We brush our teeth multiple times per day, we visit the dentist for a professional cleaning twice yearly, and the motivated among us floss on a consistent basis. But do we understand just how important our pets’ dental health truly is?

Your Pet’s Dental Health

Your pet’s dental health is a leading indicator of his overall health and wellness. A clean mouth and well-cared for teeth and gums is indicative of overall health. When your dog or cat’s mouth becomes consistently odorous, dinghy looking, or full of grime, it points to more issues that when left unaddressed, can turn into more serious problems. What are some ways to take advantage of the month of February and address your pet’s dental health?

  • Both dogs and cats benefit greatly from daily teeth brushing. Although brushing your dog or cat’s teeth may prove a challenge at first, eventually you and your pet will get the hang of it! You may even come to enjoy the daily ritual and bonding with your pet. Daily brushing prevents plaque buildup, contributes to gum health, and freshens breath.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning for your pet. Most veterinarians offer this service. During a cleaning, your vet will take care of plaque build-up and perform important teeth maintenance on your dog or cat, thereby preventing future issues.
  • Provide your pet with a healthy diet designed to prevent plaque build-up and promote healthy gums — ask your vet about this special type of diet. Additionally, avoid feeding your dog scraps from the table.
  • Check your dog or cat’s teeth and gums regularly for signs of gum disease or other issues. The gums should be pink and free from build-up, tumors, sores, or other inconsistencies. If you spot any irregularities, visit the veterinarian at once.

Throughout the month of February, Pets Head to Tail is celebrating National Pet Dental Health Month by offering a 10% discount on all of our dental-related products. We hope you take this opportunity to address the health of your pet’s teeth and gums!

Helping Your Pet Cope With Loss

Has your family experienced the incredible pain and hurt that stems from the loss of a pet? If so, you probably understand how difficult it can be to cope with this type of loss. How do your other pet(s) cope? Do they walk around your house stunned, anxious, confused, or depressed? When this type of tragedy occurs, here are some practical ways to help your pet cope.

Ways to Help Your Pet Cope with Loss

As a pet owner, you understand that pets are very in tune with the emotions and health of the people around them. They understand changes, and they respond to these shifts in real ways.

  • Encourage your pet to continue eating and exercising. If your pet shows no appetite or willingness to exercise, try changing some things up. Place the food bowl in a different location. Include a couple of treats in the bowl. Try a new activity with your pet.
  • If your animal shows signs of grieving or depression, shower him with love and attention. Spend as much time with your dog or cat as possible to help him get through this difficult time. Pet him a lot, and speak with him in calming, soothing tones.
  • Keep up a great attitude. If you walk around with a horrible, sad countenance, your dog or cat picks up on that mood and responds in kind. If at all possible, display an affectionate, positive mood for as much of the day as possible.
  • Set realistic expectations. For the first week or so, the transition will be difficult — do not necessarily expect everything to go back to normal immediately. Give your pet time and space with which to make this life altering transition. After a few weeks, though, you and your pet will get back into a great routine.
  • Seek advice from your veterinarian. He or she may have some great suggestions for you to help your dog or cat cope and move forward.

No matter what the situation, helping your existing dog or cat cope in the face of loss is a difficult pursuit. However, spend the additional time necessary to help your dog or cat have a wonderful and important transition.

Coping With the Loss of a Pet

The average dog lives between 8 and 16 years, depending upon its size and breed. The average cat’s lifespan is 15-21. Compared with the higher life expectancy of human beings — particularly those living in our country — we can be certain of the fact that if we own a cat or a dog, we will most likely walk through the process of death with them. As we cope with this experience, we also feel their absence very deeply, and many owners wonder how they will continue to go on after their family member is gone.

Suggestions for Coping with the Loss of a Pet

Pets — both dogs and cats — most certainly become integral members of our family for the length of their lifespans. Each one has a unique story — a way in which it became a part of our identity. As these pets grow older, experience significant health issues and personality changes, we must continue on and not lose hope. Rather, we support and encourage our pets, and the surrounding members of our family. How do we deal with the loss of a pet? And what are some of the ways we can encourage our other pets through the process as well?

Suggestion for Coping with the Loss of a Pet

  1. Walk through the hurt. Do not try to deny or push down the pain. The dog or cat that recently passed on was a living, breathing member of your family. It went on vacation with you; it had a personality; it had fun and funny habits and eccentricities. Coping with loss involves actually walking through the pain.
  2. Provide for your pet following his or her death. Speak with your vet about various burial and cremation options, and decide which path is right for you.
  3. Because the pet is a member of your family, make sure to call and tell your other family members. Do not try to deny what happened. Explain the circumstances to your children and grandchildren. They will want to process through this with you.
  4. Consider speaking with your veterinarian about joining a local pet loss group. This group will provide great encouragement to you throughout this difficult time.

In summary, when  a pet dies, make sure that you walk through the experience rather than denying it.  Continue building your relationship with your existing pets and enjoy each new day with your family and dog or cat.
